Didelphis Virginiana: A Proving of Virginia Opossum

Introduction

Conducted and written by: Susan Sonz, C.C.H., I.H.C., and Mary-Lynn Culbert, C.C.H. (NYSH Directors)

Remedy Name: Sanguis Didelphis Virginiana

Available From: Hahnemann Laboratory & Pharmacy (1-888-427-6422)

Scientific Classification

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Class: Mammalia
  • Infraclass: Marsupialia (only North American Marsupial)
  • Phylum: Chordata
  • Order: Didephimorphia
  • Family: Didelphidae
  • Male: Jack
  • Female: Jill
  • Young: Joey

Etymology: Didelphis means “double womb”; Virginiana references Virginia, where explorer John Smith first described the animal in 1608; Opossum derives from Native American apasum, meaning “white animal.”

Natural History

Marsupials

The order Didelphimorphia includes only New World marsupials. Opossums appear in North American fossil records dating back 100 million years. Of 66 species of Didelphimorphia in the New World, only the Virginia Opossum reaches North America.

Marsupials possess a fur-lined abdominal pouch where young complete development after a brief 12-13 day gestation. They feature skeletal systems closer to reptiles, less efficient reproduction, and more primitive brains than placental mammals. The opossum’s brain is one-third to one-half the size of comparable mammals, yet testing shows they rank above dogs in intelligence.

Physical Characteristics

Opossums are placid, shy omnivores approximately cat-sized, weighing 4-12 pounds and measuring 15-24 inches long (excluding tails). Males are larger than females by roughly one-third.

Features:

  • Elongated snout with pink nose
  • Black eyes and ears
  • White-covered face
  • Grayish-white body with dark-grey legs
  • Grizzled appearance from white-tipped guard hairs
  • 50 teeth—more than any other land mammal
  • Color vision capability (rare among mammals)
  • Excellent night vision
  • Hairless, prehensile tail
  • Short legs with plantigrade gait
  • Opposable thumb-like appendage on hind feet
  • Dexterous fingers resembling raccoon paws

Opossums have the shortest lifespan of comparably-sized animals—averaging 2-3 years in the wild, with males experiencing higher mortality from ranging farther and encountering predators and vehicles.

Range and Habitat

Virginia opossums inhabit southeastern Canada through eastern United States into Costa Rica, with introductions in California, Arizona, Colorado, and Idaho. Recent range extensions northward coincide with milder winters.

These animals are both terrestrial and arboreal, preferring low, damp woodlands near permanent water sources. They are strong swimmers when necessary. As solitary and nomadic creatures, they follow water courses through home ranges of 15-40 acres, moving when food supplies diminish. Individual ranges overlap with tolerance among neighbors, though they defend currently occupied territory.

Vocalizations include: hisses, growls, screeches, and distinctive metallic clicks used in mating and aggression.

Playing Possum

When threatened, opossums first bare all fifty teeth, hiss, and growl. If escape fails, they enter a catatonic state—“playing possum”—an involuntary stress response lasting minutes to hours. During this state:

  • Heart rate drops 46 percent
  • Respiration decreases 30 percent
  • Animals can be moved without reviving
  • Recovery occurs spontaneously when danger passes

Research indicates only about 10% of studied opossums exhibited this behavior consistently, with decreasing response upon repeated exposure.

Behavior

Opossums lack complex social systems of placental mammals. Even young opossums show little play or interaction, remaining generally lethargic.

  • Males are aggressive toward other males but rarely toward females
  • Females tolerate each other (except when in heat)
  • Generally don’t tolerate males except during receptivity
  • Primarily nocturnal, becoming active during warm days when pregnant or nursing females forage more
  • Don’t hibernate but may remain denned during extreme cold
  • Must forage regularly due to inability to store food

Den characteristics: hollow trees, fallen logs, brush piles, abandoned nests/burrows, or human structures (porches, attics, chimneys). Opossums share winter dens with rabbits, skunks, raccoons, and woodchucks.

Grooming habits: Opossums wash faces with front paws like cats and use their hind thumbs for grooming. Females particularly groom their pouches when young are present.

Reproduction

Opossums possess primitive, forked reproductive systems—males have forked penises; females have paired lateral vaginae.

Reproductive cycle:

  • Gestation: 12-13 days
  • Birth size: approximately honey bee-sized
  • Litter average: 13-21 babies
  • Functional nipples: typically 13 (not all functional)
  • Survival depends on reaching and attaching to working nipples—others die
  • Mother removes dead babies from pouch

Development:

  • Mothers lick and clean babies while attached to nipples
  • Young emerge at ~3 months, riding mother’s back
  • Self-grooming begins upon pouch emergence
  • Males provide no parental care
  • Young become independent at weaning, dispersing within one month
  • Females can mate shortly after weaning, producing two litters per season
  • Second litter young wean by September/October

Mortality rates:

  • In-pouch: 10-25 percent
  • Beyond weaning: fewer than 10 percent survive one year

Diet

Opossums are omnivorous, eating whatever is available:

  • Spring: plants and worms
  • Summer: insects, snails, amphibians
  • Fall: grains, fruits, nuts
  • Winter: small rodents (shrews, voles, rats, mice)

Specialties:

  • Pit viper immunity—consume rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins
  • Preference for decomposing fruit/meat over fresh food
  • Carrion with maggots considered year-round delicacy
  • Road kill favored
  • Cat food attracts them to suburban areas
  • Persimmons especially enjoyed in southern United States

Fat cycling: They accumulate brown fat in late fall/early winter, losing up to 45% body weight over winter. Possum fat serves as traditional base for herbal salves treating arthritis and rheumatism.

Unique Immune Features

Opossums demonstrate unusual disease resistance, including remarkable rabies resistance attributable to their low body temperature (94-97°F), which prevents virus survival.

Their blood contains a Lethal Toxin Neutralizing Factor (LTNF) conferring immunity to pit viper venom—currently researched as a universal antitoxin for animal, plant, and bacterial toxins.

However, opossums host numerous parasites and diseases transmissible to other animals and humans, particularly Sarcocystis Neuroma, a protozoan causing Equine Protozoal Myelitis in horses.

Predators

Primary predators include:

  • Great horned owls
  • Dogs
  • Coyotes
  • Internal/external parasites (intestinal worms, fleas, ticks)
  • Humans (accidental vehicle strikes, deliberate removal, traditional hunting for meat and fur)
  • Malnutrition and starvation

The Proving

Overview

The best opportunity for exercising our sense of observation and to perfect it, is by proving the medicines ourselves.” —Samuel Hahnemann

Timeline:

  • Prover orientation: June 30, 2008
  • Day Zero (first doses): September 2, 2008
  • Extraction meeting: September 28, 2008

Protocol:

  • Fifteen provers participated
  • Each met with supervisors for initial case-taking
  • Instructed to take up to three 30c doses daily for two days
  • Further doses discontinued if any reaction occurred

Source animal: Young adult lactating female opossum, humanely trapped in Long Island urban location using cat food bait (August 2-3, 2008). Animal was calm throughout capture, in good health though thin from nursing. Blood collected via standard ACD vacutainer and transported to Hahnemann Laboratory and Pharmacy where Michael Quinn and Sonya Sakaske prepared the remedy.

Dosing Results

  • 4 provers: required only one dose for strong, recordable symptoms
  • 2 provers: took second dose
  • 2 provers: needed third dose
  • 2 provers: took four doses
  • 5 provers (4 male): took all six doses with no effect

Overall symptom profile: Three provers experienced very uncomfortable, strong symptoms; four provers felt improvement in overall states; two Master Provers and four supervisors experienced strong emotional and signature symptoms.

Signature Symptoms / Reports

Signature symptoms reflect the substance’s nature and deepen understanding of similitude.

Prover #3, Day 01: Dream about washing one’s feet. Note: Opossums prefer low, damp woodlands near water and are strong swimmers.

Prover #10, Day 01-02: Multiple dreams of houseflies on white backgrounds; waking in sweat feeling hot. Note: Correlates with opossum preference for decomposing matter and association with insects.

Prover #10, Day 02: Noticed dogwood tree covered with houseflies (approximately 100 flies). Later found flies in car and wine glass at restaurant in Manhattan.

Prover #10, Day 02: Intermittent wafting of dead animal odor distinct as garbage truck drippings. Note: Opossums prefer decomposing fruit/meat and earn “nature’s sanitation engineers” nickname.

Prover #10, Day 01: Dream of mother’s dirty freezer with old food and spilled chocolate ice cream.

Prover #10, Day 15: First day volunteering at organic co-op involved sorting molded, rancid fruit for compost and cleaning dirty refrigerator—remarkably matching earlier dream.

Prover #10, Day 11: Noted unusual increased fruit consumption (pineapple, papaya, bananas, berries, apples)—diverging from typical raw vegetable preference. Note: Opossums are omnivorous and especially fond of persimmons.

Prover #14, Day 22: Dream of raccoon with possum face under son’s sheets. Note: Raccoons and opossums share habitat and have been known to share winter dens.

Synchronistic Events

Master Prover Susan Sonz visited a Sag Harbor friend on Day 1 of the proving. A large female opossum appeared at the back door and remained over an hour—unprecedented in the friend’s ten-year residence there.

Major Themes

1. Out of Control vs. Calm

Prover #1 described panic attacks in over-stimulating situations:

“I walk into some over-stimulating situation and the first thing that happens is I notice I don’t know where to look.”

Experienced heat rushes, facial burning, numb hands, chest tightness, racing heart, giddiness. In playground chaos, couldn’t track children: “I gotta get out of here—just can’t do it.” Giggled on drive home feeling rushed. Couldn’t write, normally a primary activity.

Same prover, 6 minutes post-remedy: “I feel like the remedy is hitting me now. I feel shaky and a little out of control.” Two minutes later: “I feel myself sitting really still. Eyes looking around calmly, emotionlessly. Feel very still.”

Prover #3’s experience: Husband and son reported she seemed happier, easier-going. She felt “like I’m floating through my life a little bit more than usual” and wasn’t bothered by usual annoyances. This lasted approximately one week: “I continue to be quite easy going, letting things just float away from me—I like this!”

By Day 07, the calm was fading: “I’m more irritable today! The calm of the last week seems to be fading, which is unfortunate.”

Journal summary: “I have been so calm and positive, so much less irritable about little things, so much less fluctuating in my emotional state than usual, that not only have I been aware of this, but others around me have commented on it. This has been the most pleasant surprise of the proving for me!”

Prover #6: “Mentally I just felt stable all through this proving. I felt more positive. A good feeling. Positive all the way through.”

Prover #8: “I have not been getting angry when people tease me. I otherwise would get irritated and defensive. But instead I was calm. I didn’t even feel like retaliating. It did not bother me in the slightest bit. All I did was giggle.” Later: “I feel at ease with myself, calm. I feel I am now in sync with everybody. Normally I am hyper-active, always in a hurry.”

2. Hypersensitivity vs. Detached

Prover #2, Days 01-02: Normally good sense of smell became heightened to cleaning fluids, food, landfill, smoke. “Someone walked by who had just showered and the smell was overwhelmingly like cleaning fluid (ammonia).”

Prover #4, Days 02-09: Enhanced smell perception made perfume trails noticeable. “It’s like they leave a trail in their wake—very odd.” Girlfriend thought she was “being crazy” when smelling soap in her home hours after cleaning.

Prover #7, Day 00: “I realized I was in a daze, that I focused on a lot of things around me, like trees and houses, like I’ve never seen them before. Spent rest of the day in a daze with hyper-sensitive eyes and ears.” Sound was annoying, causing headaches.

Same prover, Day 01: “Hyper-sensitive eyes and ears, I was really goofy today. I was a silly bitch.” Middle back sensitive around spine.

Same prover, Day 05: “I’m still dazed. It’s like my brain and body are strangers to each other.”

Prover #7 extraction meeting: “First day within a half hour my eyes and ears went sharp. I’m driving to school and I’m looking at trees, focusing on trees in H.D. I kept looking at weird things. The bad part was my ears would just annoy me—people talking—I just wanted to shut them off.” Felt detached: “Like my soul was up here.”

Prover #10, Days 01-02: Dog smell became repulsive. Later smelled dog feces intermittently that no one else could detect. Husband and daughter confirmed neither her clothes nor body emitted the smell. “One minute I smell it then without moving it’s gone and then I smell it again.” Nap eliminated the smell.

Prover #10: “Horrible depression—detached with no way of getting back to myself.”

Prover #13, Day 05: “I did have a couple of smell overload moments again today. Two women with crazy hairdos—overwhelming smell of hairspray and perfume. Also two women on the bus to the U.S. Open.”

3. Mind Confusion

Prover #1, Day 07: “Can’t bring myself to address packages, to email even. Feels like it’s too hard, too much effort. I feel sluggish, stupid.”

Prover #1, Day 08: “Skipping letters and words and writing wrong words and terrible handwriting. This used to happen before when I was struggling with my A.D.D.” Felt scattered without grasp on things. “My mind moves faster than my hand can write and it is very frustrating.”

Prover #2, Day 09: “My memory is going away, I can’t concentrate on more than one thing at a time.”

Prover #3, Day 00: “I keep starting to do things and walking out of the room without doing them, like opening a drawer to get something and not getting it.”

Prover #3, Day 05: “I space out and forget about a meeting at work today, extremely unusual for me.”

Prover #3, Day 06: “I feel spacey this afternoon, like my head is in a fog. Now I feel a little bit like I’m floating through my day.”

Prover #4: “I felt like I was tripped out on drugs sometimes because I couldn’t focus on anything and the room would seem like it was slowly changing its dimensions.”

Prover #10, Day 00: Dream of earthquake-like waves under sidewalk (unusual).

Prover #10, Day 01: Dream of elevator flipping upside down in slow, gradual alteration: “I felt like my sense of reality was flipping.”

4. Children / Protection / Lactation / Fertility

Notable: Prover #1 resumed lactation after weaning her son months earlier. Prover #6 also began lactating spontaneously.

Prover #6’s daughter: Started clinging to her back and hanging from her neck during the proving, continuing behavior into the extraction meeting.

Prover #1: Switched from stroller to baby carrier, carrying her 18-month-old son in a pouch-like carrier on chest and back for a month. Two days after pulling out the stroller, reconsidered: “Why have I been carrying him when I have this stroller?” Immediately returned to stroller use.

Prover #1, Day 07: “I am passing out while my kids are jumping on top of me. I have not been this exhausted since I was five weeks pregnant. I cannot keep my eyes open.”

Prover #1, Day 12: “My son smells very sweaty to me. I bathe him and I know he should smell like his mild shampoo but he still smells like sweat, even right out of the bath.”

Prover #3, Day 01 dream: “I’m in a class and I tell something about Leonardo Da Vinci having taught about breast feeding!”

Prover #3, Day 06 dream: Arriving at Mother/Daughter Reading Group reunion with tuna salad (surprising, as she dislikes tuna).

Prover #3, Day 06 dream: “I’m sitting on the toilet and realize I’m bleeding, like a period, and I’m horrified because I stopped getting my period several years ago.”

Prover #3, Day 07 dream: “I hear noise in my hallway and open the door to find my former neighbors, a little boy Henry and his mom Laura, on the floor on their stomachs outside my door. They’re giggling and having fun. When Laura notices me she says it’s Henry’s birthday and they’re pretending to swim.”

Prover #4, Day 03 dream: “I dreamt about a crazy woman who had tons of children confined to a large yard in her house. The house was gated and she refused to let anyone leave.”

Prover #13, Days 04 dreams: Swimming hole with two cute children and adults. Also, running around trying to find a lost blond, young child (not hers).

Prover #14: “On days 17 & 24 I had dreams about kids; not my kids cause I don’t have any but other people’s kids—very unusual for me. Dreams about my boyfriend’s kids, a random dream that I had a kid attached to me and a dream about my nieces.” Notable: in niece-babysitting dream, one fell down two flights of stairs but she wasn’t panicked: “I said, ‘Don’t worry, I have Arnica in my black bag.‘“

5. Water and Fullness of Ears

Prover #2, Day 00: “My head feels full again. Yelled at the driver. My voice sounded like an echo or as if it was coming far away, almost under water.”

Prover #2, Day 06: “My head feels full, especially on the left side.”

Prover #3, Day 00: “Within a few minutes of taking the rx my ears (both sides) feel stopped up, clogged, like someone’s fingers are in my ears; a little bit of a tickle, like I’m underwater or on an airplane.” Clogging returned an hour later at 9 am.

Prover #3, Day 00, 10 am: “My ears feel clogged again, with that ‘I’m under water’ feeling, and my jaw is tight. The under water feeling makes me wonder if this rx is a sea rx.”

Prover #3, Day 00, 12 noon: “My ears feel more clogged and I feel pressure both from inside my ears to the outside and from the outside to inside. Both ears equally again.” Yawning provided slight relief. “When I flew for almost nine hours a week ago, I didn’t have clogged ears! And I don’t usually have a problem with my ears when I fly.”

Prover #3, Day 09 dream: At Omega Institute standing around water with a group, about to participate in a “new age” ritual.

Prover #3, Day 12 dream: Toilet overflows requiring plunger: “Weird, but another dream about water!”

Prover #3, March 14, 2010 email: “I had brief recurrences of the clogged ears that I experienced during the proving as being quite annoying (but not painful). They seemed to recur with some periodicity for awhile, like weekly, or every two weeks, and just when I thought it wouldn’t happen again, it did.” Symptoms persisted months.

Prover #3 journal summary: “The other big theme for me has been WATER. I got thirsty immediately after taking the remedy. I had clogged ears, with pressure, that made me feel as though I was under water. I felt like I was being pushed down, like being pushed under water. I had dreams about water. I even had dreams about toilets!” Dry eyes despite increased lachrymation. Dreams featured tuna fish; craved sushi once.

Prover #4, Day 05 dream: In house, friend smoking cigarette, weird two-sink toilet with feces that wouldn’t flush: “I was disgusted by it.”

Master Prover Dreams Featuring Water

Master Prover #1, Day 14: “I’m in my childhood home during a flood. I’m looking down from my bedroom window and see my neighbor’s house underwater. Everyone presumes the much-hated neighbors are drowned. I feel a bit guilty for having done nothing to save them. In spite of being surrounded by the flood waters, I feel no sense of danger; just a calm, matter-of-fact attitude. The scene changes: the water has receded and there are the neighbors very much alive and sitting on their front porch. Everyone is surprised. They look like Burl Ives and family—very folksy and down-homey, a real hillbilly family.”

Master Prover #2, Day 13: “My husband and I are in charge of taking care of a large, old house. We set about cleaning and tidying. There are no proper cleaning supplies so we are using odd tools and improvising. In the middle of the main, interior living room we find a huge, in-ground swimming pool. It’s very, very deep but has no water in it; very dirty but not gross—just needs a good clean. I start scrubbing using this odd kind of squeegee thing on a long wooden handle. I ask my husband over and over again for a mop and he says he doesn’t have one, even though he’s using one. I begin to scrub the sides of the pool. Suds start to appear and I’m pleasantly surprised by this as I didn’t have any soap. Then I become worried that the water will now be polluted by the soap. Suddenly there is water filling up the pool from a jet high up on one side. The soap suds vanish, I feel happy and satisfied that the pool is going to be fine.”

6. Blood / Mutilation / Body Parts

Prover #1, Day 01 dream: “I was a child and I was trying to explain that another child (maybe my own daughter) had been attacked by a big, hairy human beast. Eventually I called him Bigfoot to try to explain. I was frantically trying to tell people she was down in a pit under rocks and that Bigfoot had torn her limb from limb.” Not about death but about being mauled, especially limbs being torn off. Following tall man into woods, realized he was the beast.

Prover #1, Day 12 dream: “I was in the hotel bar. I leave and go to my room and there is a midget in the elevator and he tells me that management called to escort me to my room. He starts kissing me and I put my hand in the elevator door and it hurts. I start screaming and crying because my fingers are being ripped off.”

Prover #3, Day 06 dream: “I’m sitting on the toilet and realize I’m bleeding, like a period, and I’m horrified.”

Prover #10, Day 01 dream: “My daughter chopped my son’s head off and killed him. I imagined the blood and the body and I became upset.”

Prover #13, Day 13 dream: “Two people slaughtering a deer on their kitchen table (man and woman). I am observing ½ of deer missing. Sudden movement of deer. Deer still alive? How best to kill it humanely? It can’t possibly be alive, I think. Not very gory or bloody, looks like meat in the grocery store.”

Physical Symptoms Summary

Head Symptoms

Over half the provers (8) complained of dull, constant headaches settling in foreheads. Three experienced redness and flushing of the face. Sensations of fullness in head, ears, and frontal sinuses predominated, with many describing submersion-like pressure.

Prover #3 experienced persistent fullness in ears—initially strong, then intermittently for weeks after proving’s end. Weekly recurrence eventually ceased.

Sensory Changes

Vision: Three provers experienced heightened vision; dryness occurred alongside increased tearing.

Hearing: Heightened auditory sensitivity caused discomfort; several reported difficulty concentrating due to noise aversion.

Smell: Five provers reported strong, persistent symptoms with heightened olfactory perception of both real and imaginary odors—particularly strong, strange, offensive smells. Three also complained of obstructed sinuses; two reported head fullness, yet maintained heightened smell.

Chest and Breast Symptoms

Three female provers experienced fullness in breasts; two actually began lactating again. Two other females experienced breast pain. This correlates with the lactating female source animal and the particular significance of nursing in marsupial lifecycles.

Back Pain

Seven provers complained of lower and/or cervical pain. Pain was significant enough that one prover returned to stroller use to avoid strain.

Extremity Pain

Extremity joint pain, especially in lower extremities (notably knees), was a major complaint. Wandering pains affected different joints over the proving course. Sudden onset and resolution was characteristic.

Interesting note: Opossum rendered fat traditionally treats arthritis and rheumatism, linking to physical symptom patterns.

Skin Eruptions

Common complaints involved eruptions and itching appearing suddenly in specific locations (eyelid, elbow point, single finger, etc.), resolving quickly and affecting different body areas throughout the proving.

General Constitutional Symptoms

Many provers complained of lassitude, waking during sleep, and waking unrefreshed despite feeling generally tired. Paradoxically, two of these same provers experienced increased desire for exercise and physical exertion.

Temperature regulation: Provers generally felt hot, experiencing sudden heat flushes and profuse perspiration often at night. Sweat was described as oily and sticky (viscid) in nature. Three provers insisted this was unrelated to activity level or environment, representing unusual personal experience.

Appetite and Thirst

Appetite diminished generally, but thirst increased. Of five provers complaining of increased thirst, four reported aversion to drinking despite feeling thirsty.

Curative Results

Prover #3: “I was calm in situations where I normally would not be calm to the point where my family kept saying to me, ‘This isn’t like you!’ This calmness has remained with me, not quite as much, but I have been really calm, for me, during this whole time and that’s been great.”

Prover #10 (Lyme disease patient), November 20, 2008 email:

“I have an annoying and weird clicking in my head for about two years. I’m assuming it’s from inflammation in my cranium due to the Lyme. The clicking only happens when I run, but it’s constant when I run. About a month after the remedy, I noticed that the clicking was gone and it hasn’t returned.”

Also reported knee pain severity decreased dramatically: “I’m not limping from inflammation any more,” though back pain remained unchanged.

Additionally: “I had a little brown growth, like a darkish, growing skin tag on my face under my right eye, which I have had for at least a year. It fell off a few weeks/month after the remedy.”

Acknowledgments

Thanks extended to Michael Quinn and Sonya Sakaske at Hahnemann Laboratory and Pharmacy for providing the remedy free of charge; Jeffrey Gatz from Bioreclamation Inc. for procuring the source animal; NYSH staff and students; and all provers and supervisors who contributed observations.
